The Good Fight

The Good Fight

Maybe it’s just the kind of people we’re attracted to. But week after week for 11 years, we’ve thrown our humble digital spotlight on those around us who fight for what’s right, and who struggle to bring alive the best our region has to offer.

We’ll start you off with a dizzying array of art openings and gallery shows all over town, including links and maps: good luck. Shrek The Musical, Owl Prowl and The Brothers Grimm give the kiddies something to fight over. And every day of the week, we’ve curated a selection of awesome events worth the effort.

And speaking of fighting the good fight, no one in town does it better than our Cool Cleveland commentators, and they are on fire this week: Roldo is beside himself over the $120M+ improvements taxpayers will be asked to pony up for billionaire Browns owner Jimmy Haslam’s improvements to our football stadium. And he claims racism is at work in multi-million dollar projects on Public Square and the Opportunity Corridor. Mansfield hopes the recent Detroit shooting doesn’t turn into another Trayvon Martin. And he commends those fighting to keep McDonald’s out of Ohio City, while Joe Baur is incensed at Downtown drivers turning our “Walker’s Paradise” into a death trap.

Your truly hosts a panel on the media’s influence on public perception at the Maltz: we hope to see you there. Our new Cool Cleveland t-shirt is priceless: it can’t be bought, it can only be won by downloading and using our free mobile app. So you can follow all the good people fighting the good fight. –Thomas Mulready

Downtown
“Walker’s Paradise” or Real Life Frogger?

Downtown Cleveland has been dubbed a “walker’s paradise” by Seattle-based Walk Score, a company promoting walkable neighborhoods.

Naturally, Clevelanders are sharing the article through social media outlets the way we always do whenever our beloved city is being praised…

What’s the best way to help? Sometimes it’s just offering a place where the developmentally challenged can come to hang out, join in some group activities, maybe even work a job and earn some pay.

Cool Cleveland talked with Ron Hess, director of adult day support and vocational program at HELP Foundation about the therapeutic group activities they offer, helping to keep people active and engaged. Watch the video here. In the background, you can see the vocational training program Help U Shred, offering training and a wage to those who need assistance.

Perhaps I’m just getting cynical in my old age, but the opening of a new wing on the Ronald McDonald House in University Circle on the same day Cleveland’s City Planning Commission was holding hearings on whether to allow a hotly contested new McDonald’s franchise to open on Lorain Avenue certainly was a coincidence… or was it?

MANSFIELD: Who’s Next… But More Importantly, What’s Next? Let me pick a couple of bones, Mansfield. When Ken Blackwell ran against Ted Strickland for governor, everyone knew that Blackwell was African American and Strickland wasn’t. Yet, Strickland got at least 90 percent of the black vote in Cleveland….

The Innerbelt Bridge: Searching For Multi-Modal Alternatives in a Concrete City Joe, I normally agree with most of your points, but this one escapes me. All of the neighborhoods property values bottomed out to just about nothing well before any serious talk of the corridor set in. Shaker Blvd (at least in Shaker Heights) property values are too high to have ever become ground zero for the housing crisis…
