Shelter

Shelter

Whether it’s repurposed bomb shelters or the comforts of home at the end of a long, tough year, our region offers solace to those who seek it. Our ShopLOCAL guide has been so useful, judging by its popularity. This year, we spent most of our time (and money) in the local DIY economy, swiping square card readers attached to mobile phones, engaging with artists and craftspeople at pop-up shops and in the neighborhoods. When, all local options exhausted, we made the trek out to the national chains, the difference was palpable. Gone was the craft, the friendly welcome, the chance to talk with the person who made your gift.

We can help with your holiday bills by giving away cash when you download and use our free Cool Cleveland mobile app for iPhone and Android. You also win by clicking on our links and suggesting a cool neighborhood. Nola Lyons is our first $100 winner. She’s tied up at the moment in the hospital, but promises she’ll send a photo once the baby is born!

As we give thanks for our blessings, Roldo reminds us how the 1% are blessing themselves, and Mansfield offers a political update. Time to take shelter in the coolest region around. –Thomas Mulready

Akron’s The Bomb Shelter
Man-tiques & Vintage Treasures

Since the threat of nuclear attacks in the 1960s, until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, bomb shelters were a safe haven for families who wanted to outlast a nuclear winter. Today, the majority of these bomb shelters have been decommissioned or made into museums.

It was through the grapevine of Cool Cleveland that I heard about a new bomb shelter in Akron. This bomb shelter may not protect you from a nuclear winter, but it’s certainly a great location to find gifts and goodies this winter for the man in your life. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to check it out.

The holidays are HERE. If you haven’t yet finished your shopping, you’re running out of time. But don’t fret — shopping is super easy at locally-owned stores. For one, the traffic isn’t as horrendous in, say, Tremont, as it will be near the malls.

Our ShopLOCAL Guide isn’t just for the holidays. Use it whenever you’re looking for something unique, whether for a friend or for yourself. [Pictured: Big Fun.] Check out the Guide here

Akron’s Lonely Landmark

If you visited Grant Street in Akron 12 years ago, you would have seen a beat-up old building that had stood vacant for nearly ten years.

Originally built by Russian immigrants during the early 20th century, it housed a family in its central two-story original structure, a grocery store off the north side and a small curiosity shop off the south side. The lonely building, a piece of Akron’s rich history, would soon be rescued… Read more from Elise Gaffney here

About a month ago it was definitely not beginning to look a lot like Christmas for Cleveland Cavalier fans. The NBA lockout was in full force and the basketball season was on the brink of being cancelled.

This would have been a disaster on many levels, not the least of which would be the economic damage done to the workers and businesses that depend on the revenue from games to help get them through these particularly tough times… Read more from Larry Durstin here

ROLDO: Can the PD Show Some Honesty? Roldo will no doubt recall (because he wrote about it at the time) that then-publisher Alex Machaskee helped nudge editorial writer Chris Colford from his perch some years ago, and Chris’s political orientation (full disclosure: he’s an old friend) can best be described as center-left, hardly far left…
