French pianist sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque graduated from the Paris Conservatory in the late 1960s and began building a formidable international career that includes dozens of albums, performances with a multitude of orchestras and a diverse repertoire that includes everything from baroque to contemporary music, along with jazz, musical theater, flamenco and minimalist music.
When they perform with the Cleveland Orchestra this weekend, they’ll play Max Bruch’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, written in the 1912 for another pair of piano-playing sisters and lost between 1971 and 1970. It’s a Cleveland Orchestra premiere.
The orchestra will also play contemporary German composer Detlev Glanet’s 2013 Distant Land: Music With Brahms, a U.S. premiere, and three selections from Czech composer Bedřich Smetana’s Má Vlast. Leading the orchestra is Russian conductor Semyon Bychkov, who is also Marielle Labèque’s husband. The Friday morning concert includes only the Bruch and Smetana pieces.
Tickets are $21-$165.
