Madness

Madness

Is it madness to send out an e-blast every week for over 8 years with all the cool stuff going on in our own hometown? And what’s so mad about March anyway? No, Springtime isn’t here yet, but there’s so much going on in our parks, museums, coffeeshops, clubs, libraries, theatres, taverns, local stores, universities, bookshops and more.

Like what? Well, the XYZ Tavern is finally open, and we’ve got a preview, plus Big[BOX] is at CPT, and we’ve got an interview with playwright/comedian Mark Jaffe. We’re shopping local at the new Crafty Goodness with a feature and a video, and Mansfield is looking for help with Chateau Hough. We recommend a cozy B&B in the park, and review the new CD by Call It Fiction. We just call it another stellar week in the coolest region in the world. Does that make us mad? –Thomas Mulready

If last Friday’s soft opening of XYZ Tavern is any indication of the new pub’s success, then Cleveland’s newest tap house is poised for a bright future.

Located off W. 65th and Detroit in creatively cultivated Gordon Square — home to many local burgeoning businesses — XYZ, sister to W. 25th ABC Tavern, offers a Cheers-like atmosphere where, at least on one night, everybody knew everybody’s name… Read more from Alex Sukhoy here

Life with Pills
Side Effects May Include premieres @ CPT

After writing for a television show about nothing, Seinfeld, comedian and Shaker Heights native Mark Jaffe found himself in an entirely different and more serious ballgame when a couple of years ago his successful OB/GYN wife was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Considering writers write about what they know, eventually the funnyman had enough material that needed to come to the surface.

The result is a one-man play dealing with a roller-coaster ride through an escalating mountain of pills, fidelity, secrets, questions of manhood and bedroom performance anxiety… Read more from John Benson here

For nature lovers and historians in the Greater Cleveland area, nothing can be more romantic than a weekend at the Emerald Necklace Bed & Breakfast Inn and Tea Parlor. The Inn, with its green shingles and awning, perches above the Rocky River Reservation and a path behind the Inn leads into the ancestral forest beauty of the Cleveland Metroparks.

The forest is pristine, the silence is profound, and the Earth is at rest. Being in the Metroparks is almost as spiritual as the love two people share… Read more from Claudia Taller here

As soon as the weather breaks we plan to begin hosting training classes in viticulture for neighborhood youth at the half-acre vineyard we established on Hough Avenue.

We’re seeking any donations of usable gardening tools (rakes, hoes, pruning shears, loppers, etc.). I’ll pick them up and give you a form to deduct the donation off your taxes since we operate as a non-profit organization… Read more from Mansfield Frazier here

“It’s more than a dream, IT’S THE REAL THING.” Straight from the mouths of Akron boys, Call It Fiction, this is a real thing. Coming out this Saturday is the second project by the 5-piece: Something I’ve Never Felt. A 6 song EP, this work will be presented on a silver platter at the Grog Shop on Sat 3/5.

Pop punk isn’t a genre that has significant distinction between bands, but it still manages to attract the die-hardiest of fans. Call It Fiction’s music is very similar to many, but their tickets will probably be cheaper. Reason #1 to check them out… Read more from Laurie Wanninger here

Cool (Cleveland) Cuisine: Our food is cool & so are we I, for one, really look forward to your column (CoolCUISINE). ROLDO: Attention Should Be Paid – Now! i love cool Cleveland, all the arts people, working people, the parks, so much of Cleveland, the lake front, BUT WE HAVE GREED IS GOOD on the brain of our leaders. greed of territory, power, control, and it has been this way for a very long time. the comeback city title so proudly exclaimed in the late 80′s led to the PLUM, then many more pointless marketing ploys to keep the illusion alive that REAL change could ever come to this city. i am sorry to be the cold wind of reality but that is how i feel. i know this will probably trigger…
