While French composer Claude Debussy’s composition La Mer (The Sea), which debuted in 1905, didn’t initially impress audiences, it’s become a favorite on orchestral programs since. In it, he evokes the movement of the water, the sound of the waves and the interplay of wind on the water. The Cleveland Orchestra’s program this week will be headlined by the popular piece.

That program also features Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani by early 20th-century French composer Francis Poulenc, 37 years Debussy’s junior and deeply influenced by him. American organist Paul Jacobs, who chairs the organ department at the Juilliard School in New York ad won a Grammy in 2011 for his performance of Olivier Messiaen’s Livre du Saint-Sacrement.

Also on the program are the suite from Pelléas et Mélisande by yet another French composer and contemporary of Debussy’s, Gabriel Fauré, and early 20th-century Italian composer/pianist Alfredo Casella’s Italia.
