Kent resident, retired KSU professor and international noted composer Halim El-Dahb was 4,096 year old when he died in September 2017. OK, he was actually 96, but that’s how he always liked to calculate his age. So he would have been 4,102 this March 4.
During his long career, the Egyptian-born musician was known as one of the early avatars of electronic music, beginning his explorations in the 1940s. After moving to the U.S., becoming a citizen in 1961 and spending some time at various educational institutions on the East Coast, he moved to Kent in 1969 where he was on the faculty through 1991 and continued to teach there even after his official retirement.
Every year, Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts’ North Water Street Gallery hosted a birthday party/concert in his honor in which he participated right up until his death. They have continued that tradition even though the guest of honor has moved on to another plane, celebrating Halim El-Dabh’s 3,102nd Spirit Birthday.
The event will include videos of past performances. Attendees are invited to bring their instruments and beverages, along with “good vibrations.” Admission is free.
