We don’t usually think of ourselves as fashionable, with our blue collars and industrial legacy. But we forget that some of that history was spent employing thousands as one of the top regions for the design & manufacture of textiles, clothing and garments. The trend is rebounding today, with young designers emerging from Cleveland, as our video with Virginia Marti-trained designer Ali Rahimi shows, and as reflected in Elisa Vietri’s image at left of quilts at Lake Metroparks annual show. Changing fashions and styles in architecture and cuisine are on display in our Videotour of Cleveland’s awesome arcades, and our CoolCUISINE review & video of Mekong River in Cle Hts. VIDEOTOUR: Urban Tour of Cleveland’s Arcades
The Colonial Marketplace is actually the name for the complex that consists of The Colonial Arcade and Euclid Arcade, now connected in the middle with a food court. Both of these arcades run between Prospect on the South and Euclid Avenue on the North end.
At one time there were five arcades downtown. The Williamson Arcade was parallel to and situated just west of The Old Arcade, where the BP Building now stands, and the Taylor Arcade reached between Prospect and Euclid Avenues, just east of the Colonial Arcade. Fashion designer to the stars, Ali Rahimi owes it all to Virginia Marti, whom he says he is obliged to for “giving me a career, and giving me a chance to make a living at what I love to do…” What he does is dress A-list stars and the glitterati at his studio Mon Atelier in Los Angeles, with many of his designs appearing on the Red Carpet for events like the Academy Awards.
He recently visited his alma mater, spoke to the students and showed some of his incredible gowns, and Cool Cleveland was lucky enough to spend a few moments discussing how exactly he makes his fabulous living, and what his education in Cleveland means to him. Watch the video and learn more here.

We have some indie rockers on our hands. The debut eponymous album from Clevelanders Above the Atlantic was released in December to patiently awaiting fans — the ones that had a taste of their In Transit EP and needed a full serving.

One thing is for certain: The encounter between Edward Henderson, a 40-year-old Cleveland Heights man with a history of mental illness, and four officers of the Cleveland Police Department on New Year’s Day 2011 will result in no winners… only losers.
No matter what happened that fateful day just the contentiousness of the process of putting police officers on trial can, and does, rend and tear at the social fabric of the community — the lives of those involved (including the seven officers who allegedly witnessed the alleged attack, and, indeed the lives of members of the community at-large) will be forever altered… perhaps in ways as yet imaginable…

LOL!!! so you are mad that he doesn’t use a teleprompter??? That he can answer questions using his brain and heart? We finally have someone in charge that is willing to make the tough decisions because Taft did not do it, and Strickland certainly was afraid to and you are going to knock him. I keep hearing all of you Progessive Socialists knocking Kasich, but I never hear any answers or solutions. Oh, I forgot, your solutions are more taxes and more spending. Give me a break…!

Kasich lost his place over and over, and fell back to nattering about lower taxes, although from his budget which by the way INCREASES spending by million over Stricklands budgets, as even the conservative Buckeye Institute admitted its clear the lower taxes will only be for a handful of the wealthy. Most of us will be paying much, much more…
