Express Yourself

And one of the best ways to do that is to exercise your right to vote on or before Tue 11/6. To help, we offer our Cool Cleveland endorsements for the major candidates and issues. Look below and on the Cool Cleveland mobile app for your reference 24/7.

Not that this town has a problem expressing itself. This week, CIA alums from Cleveland and Brooklyn compare & contrast, while Karen Gahl-Mills of CAC explains how they give millions to the arts so NEOhioans can better express themselves. Illustrators express the finer points of life and (mainly) death inspired by metal, horror and hardcore at Loren Naji Studio Gallery. Party down at Ghoulardifest, Dia De Muertos, Shoreway to Heaven or Polkapocalypse- you take your pick.

Dig our feature on Hot Trash on the radio, Doug Katz showing us around his new eatery at the Museum, and a video preview of Holden Arboretum’s new digs. Hear that noise? That’s the sound of a bunch of cool people expressing themselves at top volume. Turn it up. And don’t forget to vote. –Thomas Mulready

Life & Death in Black & White
Revenge of the Illustrator

A mohawked demon with decaying skin, lips curled into a grim grin, ferociously clutches a decapitated head in a talon-like hand as he eagerly rips the flesh from its skull with the other.

Every torn shred of muscle fiber is meticulously detailed, every blood vessel defined. This is art.

Cleveland will give the illustrative arts its due when one of the largest collections of graphic illustrators, album cover artists, comic artists and tattoo artists from around the world combine forces @ Loren Naji Studio Gallery…

Michael Ruhlman’s the guy you go to when you want to talk food. Or cook it. Or eat it.

He’s just one of many culinary celebrities appearing at the 7th Annual Fabulous Food Show (FFS), November 9-11, 2012 at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Ruhlman talks with Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready at the world-famous West Side Market, now celebrating its 100th birthday, as Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson proclaims the week leading up to the FFS as Cleveland Culinary Celebration Week.

Check out Ruhlman’s enthusiasm as he ticks off the celebrity chefs he know that will be making special appearances at this year’s Fabulous Food Show at the I-X Center: his buddy Michael Symon, Anne Burrell, Sara Molton, and Jacques Pepin, among others.

For his part, Ruhlman appears at the FFS on Fri 11/9 at 5:45, with a meet and greet afterwards. He’ll teach you how to cure bacon and “how bacon can save the world if you make it yourself.” FabulousFoodShow.com

Culture and tourism is the fourth largest industry in our region. But with the slow economy recently, one may wonder why more damage hasn’t been done to our region’s massive but fragile arts and cultural infrastructure. The cigarette tax supports cultural institutions, projects and individuals with about $16 million per year, a per capita rate that is higher than all but four states! Listen in as Karen Gahl-Mills of Cuyahoga Arts & Culture discusses the importance of investing in arts & culture in our community.

Victoria Bussert and the Music Theatre program she directs at Baldwin-Wallace University is legendary among agents in New York City. These normally jaded and unimpressed professionals wouldn’t think of missing her annual showcase in the city, where her students strut their stuff. Lately, every single graduate has been signed by an agent, an impressive accomplishment.

Now she’s mounting the first production of Follies in the Cleveland area in 25 years. She knows because she mounted the last one. Usually considered too large, complicated and challenging for University students, Bussert relishes the opportunity to put her talented students (and a few faculty) on stage. So many good students, in fact, that she’s double-casting the leads. Watch her engaging Cool Cleveland interview, complete with blackout, here.

It would be folly to wait. Get your tickets soon, as the production only runs 8 nights: November 8-11 and 15-18. BW.edu

Alumni of the Cleveland Institute of Art’s (CIA) College of Art and Design living in Cleveland and Brooklyn, NY, will showcase their work at an upcoming gallery highlighting the diversity of urban-based art colonies.

The exhibit is part of CIA’s mission to promote graduated artists, and Bruce Checefsky specifically hopes to showcase the differences in life between the two urban environments.

“The question that I posed to myself and the artist is — does where you live make a difference in what you make?” explains Checefsky…

Roger Gettig is the guy you want to talk with about your plants, trees and landscaping.

He’s overseeing an ambition master plan at Holden Arboretum, three years in the making, to transform the user experience at Holden Arboretum, including a new Visitors Center, a tree allee, an elevated 500-foot canopy walk, and an expanded Rhododendron Exploration Garden, with plans for international recognition on the scale of The Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

We live in an age when people define themselves by adhering stick figure characters to the windows of their innocuous sedans and SUVs as automated systems spoon-feed us the same mundane top 40 we’ve been hearing for the past 20 years.

I grew up in the dystopic future that Queen warned of in Radio Ga Ga, and I can honestly tell the Ramones that I do not remember rock ‘n roll radio, having never lived through it.

I heard people tell stories of DJs who introduced new music to the public — find one with your sensibilities and he could lead you into new worlds…

Victor Hugo wrote, “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come,” and indeed the surprisingly large turnout at Chateau Hough’s first ever “Friendraiser” in weather that — in typical Cleveland-style — went from very nice to very nasty in a matter of hours, is a testament to the truth of that quote…
