Near West Theatre Presents Musical About a Teen Boy Aspiring to Be a Drag Queen

Fri 4/17-Sun 5/3

Near West Theatre’s spring teen and adult production is Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, a 2017 musical based on a 2011 British TV documentary called Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.  Given the Ohio legislature’s recent twisted attempts to ban drag performances in order to “protect the children” it couldn’t be more timely. It follows the ups and downs of teenage Jamie as he pursues his dream of becoming a drag performer while dealing with the usual difficulties of high school, amplified by his unusual interests. With a book and lyrics by Tom MacRae and music by Dan Gillespie Sells, the show has had numerous runs in England including in the West End (London’s Broadway equivalent), although it’s less well known here.

Director David Turner, musical director Olivia Tassone and a cast of 32 performers will bring the show to life at Near West Theatre for three weekends.

“This show is full of relatable content, not only for the LGBTQIA+ community, but for anyone who has ever felt different, non-conforming, or even rejected,” says Tassone. “Jamie’s story is not specific to drag culture or even the queer community—it’s a story about going against the grain and finding your power in a world that tells everyone to conform.”

Turner adds, “I hope audiences leave feeling inspired to embrace their most authentic selves. Life is too short, and the world can be too heavy, not to celebrate who you are and what brings you joy. And if the people around you don’t recognize your brilliance, find or create your chosen family who does. It’s time to step out of the darkness and into your own spotlight.”
