Jazz-Based Ensemble Either/Orchestra Shares Its Affinity for Ethiopian Music in Two Concerts

Fri 4/10-Sat 4/11 @ 7PM

Cleveland’s No Exit New Music not only presents its own concerts heavy on world premieres of newly composed music, it also promotes concerts by other ensembles with a sympathetic sensibility: challenging the boundaries of what music is supposed to sound like and coming up with something fresh.

The Massachusetts-based brass-heavy Either/Orchestra is one such ensemble. Founded more than 40 years ago by Russ Gershon, who still serves as band leader, its eclectic roots are in jazz, ranging from Duke Ellington to Sun Ra, and its repertoire has consisted of both original tunes and reworkings of classics, mostly jazz, but also Bob Dylan, the Beatles and Robert Fripp. Later it developed an interest in Ethiopian music which it worked into its sound, eventually performing in Ethiopia and working with Ethiopian artists.

When the group comes to town, for a performance at Trinity Cathedral Friday April 10 and one at the BOP STOP on Saturday April 11, it will perform a difference program each night. It will be joined by a pair of Ethiopian singers Bruck Tesfaye and Munit Mesfin.

As always No Exit New Music performances are free and open to all.
