Caroline, or Change, the Tony Kushner/Jeanine Tesori music which debuted on Broadway in 2004, revolves around a Caroline, a Black women who has a job as a housekeeper for a troubled middle-class family with an eight-year-old son Noah. Set in 1963, the growing Civil Rights movement (including the destruction of a Confederate statue) and the assassination of President Kennedy are woven into the stories about Noah’s relationship with his father and stepmother, and Caroline’s relationship to all of them, as well as her own children.
Cain Park in Cleveland Heights is presenting the show for its next production in the Alma Theatre. Joanna May Cullinan, a familiar face at Cain Park, directs the show, with Colleen Longshaw, who has appeared at Karamu, Great Lakes Theatre, the Beck Center and the Cleveland Playhouse, among others, in the title role. The play runs through Sunday August 24.
