Best In Town
Having just returned from a long weekend in NYC, I can tell you, things have changed there. The street life is muted, everyone seems broke from paying sky-high rents. And now it’s all corporate. When the first McDonalds hit Manhattan in ’73, I swore chains couldn’t compete with local diners and chefs. Now there’s 74 McD’s in Manhattan alone, more than any other city. 8th Street in the Village was all records, hats, shoes, boutiques, now it’s one national logo after another. Times Square same thing, but bigger logos. Boring.This is not the case in Cleveland. At least not the cool neighborhoods we cover, including the neighborhoods and hip areas like Lakewood, Cleveland Heights and Akron. Of course corporate culture exists, but it hasn’t taken over. Which means we’re fighting a battle. Shop local. Play Local. Start local businesses. Experience local art. There’s no guarantee any of it will be here later if you don’t.
Which is why we do our thing every week and spotlight the best local stuff in town and send it to your inbox. And why we do it everyday and post it to our mobile app. Just for you. To help you keep this place from becoming boring. Like so many other big cities. –Thomas Mulready

In 2005, at the beginning of his second term, George W. Bush signed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCCA), which gives gun manufacturers, distributors and dealers almost unlimited immunity from civil liability lawsuits.
This legislation — passed by a Republican-dominated Congress and backed by the NRA — resulted in the immediate dismissal of several lawsuits against gun manufacturers and distributors that were being litigated at the time and has been the basis for the dismissal of numerous subsequent lawsuits as well…

The carpetbagger from Tennessee didn’t take long find a way to fleece northern sports suckers.
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, one of society’s takers, will pocket the $100-million naming rights on a property tax-free stadium built, owned and maintained by taxpayers. He already had a sweet deal for a pittance of rent ($250,000) never to increase over 30 years.

Revolution Pie: With a Little Help from Our Friends I saw a band playing Beatles songs a couple years. The bassist was 68, and looked fine in a Beatle haircut. I can’t say the same for the 40-something guitarists in Justin Bieber shags….

Roldo – It’s naive to believe that large bureaucracies respond to average citizens with no clout whenever they have a problem. Requests or complaints can be met or thrown in the wastebasket depending on the whims or fears of the paper shufflers. Officials elected at large have to only serve the people who have the weight to keep them in office while ignoring the rest…
