All together now.

If we’ve learned anything at CoolCleveland in 20 years, it’s that we should all get in on the action. Learn about Chinese Square Dancing and enjoy a day of performances by acrobats, musicians, dancers and martial arts groups all celebrating Chinese New Year together at Asia Plaza. Dancing Wheels tackles dementia and everyone, caregivers, families, and health care groups get involved. And be careful who you admire: it turns out the Nazis were inspired by America’s Jim Crow laws, as you’ll hear at a Maltz Museum forum.Working together goes both ways. This week, ideastream airs “Ohio After Roe,” examining how illegal redistricting lead to the extreme politics we now endure in Ohio. And you might be interested in reading CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen Connally’s review of Prince Harry’s new book. Can we all just get along?

 CELEBRATION

Hop into the New Year

It’s the Lunar NewYear, often known as “Chinese New Year,” ringing in the Year of the Rabbit. And one of the most positive changes in Cleveland in recent decades is the growth & diversification of its Asian population, bringing new ideas, new cultures and new cuisines.

Celebrate the New Year this Sat 1/21 at Asia Plaza, with a day of performances by dancers, acrobats, musicians, and martial arts groups. Find out what “Chinese square dancing” is about! It culminates with a K-Pop Dance Party your kids will surely enjoy. Make time to visit the businesses and restaurants in the plaza too. Read more

 EXPLORE

Visit Groves Woods Preserve with Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Walk amongst the beauty of Groves Woods Preserve in the Grand River Valley with leaders Garrett Ormiston and Ken Schneider through a high-quality beech–maple mixed hardwood forest supporting several unusual species of cold-water fishes, including the southern red-bellied dace and the two-lined salamanders, which require unpolluted waters, so their presence is an important indicator of stream health.

You can expect they will have a fire going in the log cabin at the preserve, and hot cocoa to warm you and your family after the walk. Read more.

The “Spare” Bares His Soul

Having watched the Netflix series The Crown and read tabloid accounts over the decades about Charles and Diana, and Harry’s antics as a sometimes-rebellious royal, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to know anything else about that totally dysfunctional family. To my surprise, I found the book to be engaging and readable. It is a cathartic tell-all that not only tells the story of Harry’s life, trials and tribulations, but also reveals lots of interesting tidbits about the royal lifestyle and how they function or dysfunction depending on your point of view.

Based on the sales figures, people around the world are enthralled with Harry’s story. I for one am also. After reading Spare, I found Harry to be a troubled young man with many emotional scars. I wish him well and hope he tells the rest of the royals to go to hell. I suspect that if you read the book, you will come away with the same opinion…  Read more.
