Cleveland Public Theatre is known for nurturing new work, allowing playwrights, as well as directors and performers, to experiment, develop their work and tinker with it in various stages.
Its long-running Test Flight program is an early stage of that process, offering new works still in development, giving their authors the opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t when presented to a live audience.
For the next five weeks, a different work will be presented each weekend, with three performances, Thursday-Saturday at 7:30pm. The series opens with Our Lady of Common Sorrows by Jaiie Dayo Aliya. The synopsis says, “A woman recently released from prison, and her loved ones, experience a crisis of faith when her 15-year-old daughter becomes pregnant under mysterious, and perhaps miraculous, circumstances.”
The cast includes Ashley Aquilla, Isaiah Betts, Mansa Bey, Cristal Christian, Drew Pope, Royce Ruffin, Amy Spencer, and Kynnedy Stewart. Don’t bring the kids: it includes “strong language, depictions of substance abuse and talk of sexual assault.”
