Grammy-Nominated Croatia-American Jazz Vocalist Thana Alexa Performs at BOP STOP

Sat 1/21 @ 8PM

Thirty-five-year-old jazz musician Thana Alexa is a vocalist, composer, arranger, producer and “loop artist,” who layers her voice with an electronic keyboard — anyone who’s heard former Clevelander Uno Lady will understand what that means.  Through layering and processing, her voice can become an orchestra.

Alexa was raised in both the U.S. and her family’s native Croatia, where she piced up a variety of cross-cultural and musical influences, but found herself gravitating toward jazz in both places. She became the first Croatian artist to win a Grammy when her 2020 album ONA (Croatian for “she”) picked up two awards. Her bio says, “Its premise crystalized in 2017 after her attendance at the Women’s March on Washington, D.C. after which she was inspired to learn more about the stories of the women in her own family and the influences that their life experiences have had on her own existence, growth and sense of freedom.”

She also collaborates with her husband, well-known Mexican drummer Antonio Sanchez, with whom she’s made several albums and toured extensively. Sanchez will be part of her band when she performs at the BOP STOP this week, along with piano/Fender Rhodes player Maya Kronfeld, guitarist Jordan Peters and bassist Matt Brewer.

Tickets are $25 and unlike most BOP STOP events, it won’t be livestreamed. So grab tickets while you can!
