Quartet of Top Local Woodwind/Sax Players Perform at Cain Park

Iron Toys, founded in 2004, features a quartet of the area’s experienced, accomplished woodwind and saxophone players, who play more than 20 instruments between them, as they blur the boundaries between jazz, classical and avant-garde music. The ensemble will perform at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater as part of its free Tuesday Night Chamber Music series.

All four musicians will be familiar to local jazz aficionados. Tom Reed is professor of music and chair of the music department at Ashland University, principal clarinetist of the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, and bass clarinetist with the Akron Symphony Orchestra. He’s performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Howie Smith is a professor emeritus at Cleveland State; he was where he was Coordinator of Jazz Studies from 1979 to 2006. He’s toured around the world and appeared on many records in his long career, and performed with musicians ranging from Elvis Presley to John Cage to Dizzy Gillespie.

George Shernit is  a 30-year freelancer who has performed with Cleveland Orchestra, the Blossom Festival Band, and touring Broadway shows and entertainers.  Brad Wagner is a musician, composer, and arranger for Pulse, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band, and the Black Dog Octet, and has performed as a freelancer with the Cleveland Orchestra, Akron Symphony, Cleveland Pops Orchestra and more.
