Violinist Ed Caner, who with his wife Laurie Caner is the core of American roots rock band Hey Mavis, hosts regular Sunday afternoons of music at Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s Happy Days Lodge, bringing in special guests from around the region to perform with him.
This month he’s showcasing “women in song” with three of the area’s strongest and most interesting women vocalists, starting with his own wife. This isn’t nepotism; it’s Laurie’s deft and heartfelt songs and expressive voice that drive Hey Mavis. The concert features two other area musicians who are always worth checking out: Akron’s Angie Haze and Lorain County’s Rachel Brown. Haze, who calls her music “creepop from another time,” among other things, and who sounds and looks like a collision of a goth and a hippie, makes eclectic music the draws from a variety of sources both domestic and global. Brown’s alt-country-meets-jazz-meets-soul draws on sources such as Patsy Cline to create music that’s robust and rollicking. The three, plus Caner, should make an interesting combination.
