The current exhibition at the Beck Center, the Cultural Heritage Exhibition, brings together three celebrated area artists of different cultural backgrounds: Cleveland-born painter David Buttram, Cleveland native multi-media artist Gina Washington, and Ecuadorian artist Rafael Valdivieso. Each explores how culture impacts their identity
“The Cultural Heritage Exhibition brings together David Buttram, Rafael Valdivieso, and Gina Washington, three artists exploring culture, identity, memory, and lived experience through distinct artistic practices,” explains the Beck Center press release. “Buttram’s paintings draw on symbolism, spirituality, and the human condition, using light, shadow, reflection, and color to explore human emotion. Valdivieso examines migration, heritage, memory and belonging, while Washington’s interdisciplinary work explores family, community, cultural history, and personal identity. Together their work offers diverse perspectives on how culture is experienced, remembered, and shaped by personal, and collective histories.”
Beck Center will be holding an artist reception on Friday October 9, free and open to the public. The show is on view through November 1 in the Beck Center’s Hoffman-Stach Gallery.
