Cleveland’s Morgan Conservatory is an arts organization dedicated to paper-based arts—starting with the basics, the raw materials. Behind their building they have a grove of the Japanese mulberry trees known as kozo, a staple for handmade paper artists in Japan. And the Morgan’s Sam Carboolad Garden, which is the largest kozo grove in the United States, provides bark to be turned into paper —and then into artistic projects—at the Morgan.
Each November, the Morgan hosts a weekend when it invites the public to join its artists and supporters in helping to harvest and strip the bark from the kozo branches, as well as milkweed, to be processed for papermaking. There people can learn about what is involved, starting with the basics. No experience is needed; they’ll provide the tools and instructions, as well as hot beverages. The event takes place outdoors behind the Morgan next to the grove. Children under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
