A year ago, the Case Western Reserve University Community Engagement Center, which opened in 2024 to give residents who live in the communities bordering University Circle a place where they can take part in some of educational and relationship opportunities available at CWRU, featured a show called One Art, One Community showcasing work by artists who are currently incarcerated, put together in partnership with In partnership with the Grafton Correctional institution, and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Correction.
A year later, it’s putting on an encore show called the 2nd Annual One Art One Community Exhibition, implying that this will be an ongoing feature at the community engagement center. And it has expanded to include work by artists from four prisons instead of one: in addition to Grafton, the work comes from Lorain Correctional Institution, Northeast Reintegration Center, and Trumbull Correctional Institution, with 56 works by 45 artists. In addition, CWRU student curators helped to put together the show and helped its staff choose the pieces to include.
“Working in partnership with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC), this expansion brings together artists from a women’s institution and higher-security facilities, highlighting the creative process, artistic expression, and the power of art to connect communities,” says Eric Gardenhire, Grafton’s Director of Creative Arts.
The show opens with a free public reception on Wednesday October 28. Register to attend HERE.
