The regular “Happy Dog Takes On” series started as a foreign affairs panel discussion taking place for free at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square. Then it broadened its scope to address domestic issues as well. This month, it’s back to looking at the wider world as everyone is fixated on what’s going on in Iran and the Middle East.
You’ve probably read plenty about this sudden attack and the constantly shifting justifications for it, the debates about its impact on the world and the U.S. economy, the potential outcomes, and whether this war, like the Iraq and Vietnam wars, will end up being a lost, costly quagmire after promises of a quick wrap-up. (President George W. Bush’s Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld famously said, when asked how long the Iraq War would last, “Maybe six days, maybe six weeks, I doubt six months.” It lasted nine years.)
If you haven’t had it up to your eyeballs with the barrage of confusing, contradictory and infuriating news reports, come hear a couple of experts who likely know a lot more than current Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, give their takes. Cleveland Heights High School graduate Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, served in a variety of roles in the state department and elsewhere in federal government from 1985 through 2023. She spent much of that time posted in the Middle East. Her fellow panelist, Avidan Y. Cover is Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Global Security Law & Policy at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he focuses on national security, human rights, civil rights, international law and ethics.
