Cuban Classical Guitarist Edel Muñoz Makes His Return to Cleveland

Sat 2/7 @ 7:30PM

Classical guitarist Edel Muñoz began his musical studies in his native Cuba, earned his bachelors and masters degrees in Puerto Rico, and studied in Argentina, Chile and Spain, giving his music as cosmopolitan flavor. He began winning international competitions in the mid 90s, and amassed a long list of prizes before moving on to become a concert artist across North and South American and Europe. He’s currently a professor of classical guitar in Miami, Florida.

Muñoz made his Cleveland debut in 2012, and he’ll be returning to play for his northeast Ohio fans this week at the Maltz Performing Arts Center under th auspices of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society. His concert will open with a pair of baroque pieces by a pair of contemporaries: Silvius Leopold Weiss’ Passacaille, and J.S. Bach’s Suite 1 for cello.

After intermission, he’ll play Cancion Triste and Guaracha by 20th century composer Carlos Fariñas, and Concierto Elegíaco by 86-year-old Cuban classical guitarist/composer Leo Brouwer, who has been an inspiration and mentor to Muñoz.
