There’s an event that Bike Cleveland hosts every year that has never been more crucial than it is right now.

For Cranksgiving, cyclists gather at a central location before fanning out to visit area grocery stores and purchase food which is then donated to families and senior citizens in need – and boy, is there ever need right now, with food banks and pantries seeing their funding cut, SNAP benefits delayed, and eligibility for food assistance slashed in the recent Big Ugly Bill passed by Congress.

Riders will gather at the Bottlehouse Brewery and Meadery on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights to register, grab some coffee and donuts, hear a brief orientation talk and get a map of area grocery stores. You have from 11:30 to 1:45 to return to the Bottlehouse with your food, and Cleveland Heights is no food desert, so you can hit a bunch of stores if you’re ambitious. Typically riders spend about $20 purchasing food although the specific amount is up to you.

Riders of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate. If you’re not a strong cyclist, Dave’s is just two blocks away! All items must be carried by bike — in bags, or on racks or trailers. No cheating with cars! You’ll also invited to bring non-perishable items from your own pantry to donate.
