For its first international concert of the season, the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society is hosting a next generation artist in the classical guitar scene, who is a contrast to the old guard of white American and European males. Puerto Rican guitarist Leonela Alejandro is making her Cleveland debut at this show, after garnering international acclaim for winning ten first-place competition prizes and snagging the Guitar Foundation of America’s Internation Artist competition prize at just 24.
She did her early studies in Puerto Rico before migrating to the mainland to study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 2020 and finished her graduate studies at Columbus State university in 2023. Since then she has been working to establish herself as both a solo artist and a performer with orchestras.
She’ll be playing at the Maltz Performing Arts Center. Her program includes music by older living composers as well as 20th century Puerto Rican, Cuba, Brazilian, Japanese and Italian composers as well as a piece by legendary French jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Go here for tickets.
