 Possibly you’ve heard the stories about the steep decline of Monarch butterflies in the last few decades, caused by climate change, profligate pesticide use and the disappearance of their host plant — the only one that provides the sustenance they require — milkweed.

If this is something that weighs heavily on your mind, there is something you can do (in addition to planting milkweed!). You can join naturalists at the Geauga Park District’s Orchard Hills Park Lodge for a hike to collect Monarch eggs from milkweed plants. They will care for the eggs and display the adult butterflies at the Great Geauga County Fair to share their story with more people and raise awareness of their plight.

The hike is two miles on hilly terrain and while it’s mostly on trails, there may be occasions to go off-trail to find eggs in milkweed patches. Dress accordingly. Registration is required, go HERE.
