Thia month’s Akron ArtWalk in Akron’s Historic Arts District is going to be a tad different from usual. One of its core locations, Summit Artspace will be holding all its events outside due to renovations going on inside the building.

This month’s ArtWalk has a theme: “The Art of Recovery: Supporting Community Through Healing.” Expect to find art addressing the issue of recovery as well as resources for those in recovery, especially the military and veteran community.

“Through Summit Artspace, I’ve learned how to appreciate and interact with art,” says Summit ArtSpace board member and Airforce veteran Brandon Waithe. “My experiences with art have in turn helped me work through my own struggles and emotions in a healthier way.”

Among the things artwalkers will find at Summit Artspace is a table from Summit County Public Health offering resources and Narcan; an art and healing activity lead by local artist Meaghan Reed inspired by her piece “Unsaid” (see above), inviting participants to write a letter to themselves or a loved one dealing with substance abuse; resource tables from Stoned on Happiness and veterans group Warriors Journey Home, a book mobile hosted by the Akron-Summit County Public Library, and art books on sale from $10-$20 from Friends of the Main Library. Chris Reynolds will ne playing two sets of music with a focus on healing and recovery at 6:30 and 7:30pm. And walkers can help decorate a construction cone in honor of the renovations going on inside.

There will also be Akron Bazaar vendors and resident artists selling handcrafted items and art in the parking lot, and food available for purchase outside. Look for other activities nearby at the Akron Art Museum, Akron Soul Train, Nightlight Cinema and Curated Storefront.
