Most people who’ve become fans of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s free outdoor global music concert series City Stages will tell you the only thing wrong with them is that there are too few of them! Although there were three last year, there are only two this year taking place on the big stage-in-the-street on the corner of West 29th and Church Avenue in Ohio City (right across from the Transformer Station.)
Barcelona’s Las Karamba concludes the series kicked off a couple of weeks before with a sizzling performance by Colombian cumbia master Yeison Landero. Just from the description, it sounds like this show should be memorable. Although the group is based in Barcelona, the six women who make up the band converged on the city from various parts of the world including Catalonia, Cuba, Venezuela, Argentina and France. They brought their mixture of races and cultures together to form a mélange of vibrant sounds that absorbs salsa, timba, son, samba, hip hop and more. It’s hard to see how this doesn’t provoke even more of the dancing in the street which is a hallmark of City Stages concerts.
Bring your canvas chair and set it up in the street, or more likely, get up on your feet and dance —wear comfortable shoes. There are food trucks and a bar in the Transformer Station parking lot, as well as restaurants and bars all over the surrounding blocks. The Transformer Station will also be open to see the current show of work by Cleveland Museum of Art employees. It’s also free.
