Even if you’re a major opera buff, changes are good you’ve never heard of The Higgler. That’s not surprising. The two-act chamber opera was written in 2017 by Cleveland-based composer Margi Griebling-Haigh based on a 1930 short story by British author A.E. Coppard. Like many of Coppard’s stories, it’s set in rural England, revolving around an itinerant peddle (“higgler”) and a mother and daughter he encounters on his travels.
While parts of it have been performed previously, the full opera will be getting its premiere performance this weekends at Disciplines Christian Church in Cleveland Heights. It’s directed by Marla Berg who is the director of the opera program at Kent State University with Brian Skoog in the title role, with a cast that includes with sopranos Gabrielle Haigh and Lisl Wangermann, and mezzo sopranos Elizabeth Frey and Denise Milner Howell, and children’s roles such by Ava Kimbel and Koen Antal. Joseph Hollings narrates. They’ll be accompanied by chamber orchestra of 16 musicians.
