Beck Center Exhibition Looks at Influence of Heritage & Culture on Art

Art by Nicolas Lee

Fri 9/23 @ 6-7:30PM

The Beck Center for the Arts’ Hoffman-Stach Gallery debuts the new version of its annual “Cultural Heritage Exhibition & Experience 2022,” in which local, regional and international artists address how their culture, history and environment impacted each of the artists.

It showcases the work of painter Nicholas Lee, photographer Donte Woods-Spike and authors F. Isabel Campoy and Alma Flor Ada in their book ¡Pío Peep!, featuring adaptations by Alice Schertle and illustrations by Vivi Escriva.

Lee’s paintings explore how unrepresented people of color appear in the history of Western art, while Woods-Spikes photos look at how heritage shapes people’s images and the way they live. There’ll also be a reading table where both children and adults can look at books in both Spanish and English. And ¡Pío Peep!’s artwork will be hung low so children can easily look at it.

This exhibit is free and family-friendly. It opens with a reception on Friday September 23 @ 6-7:30pm and will be viewable during Beck Centers normal business hours and during performances on evenings and weekends.
