Regional Premiere at Dobama Theatre Tackles Climate Change With Humor

Fri 1/21-Sun 2/13

Playwright Madeleine George is known for works that combine serious issues with pointed humor, and that’s the case with her Hurricane Diane, which debuted at the Two River Regional Theater in New Jersey in 2017 and off-Broadway in February, 2019, where it won the Obie Award.

The lead character is Diane, a permaculture gardener whose alternate identity is the Greek god Dionysus, which gives her supernatural talents. She’s returned to Earth with a mission to repair the damage to the environment and she starts out with four housewives in a New Jersey subdivision. The official description of the lays says that it’s a “hilarious evisceration of the blind eye we all turn to climate change and the impending storm of catharsis that awaits us all, even in our own backyards.”

Shannon Sindelar directs the regional premiere of the play, which opens at Dobama Theatre this weekend. Noted local actress Amiee Collier, a familiar figure on local stages, takes on  the role of Diane/Dionysus. The production runs through USnday February 13. Go here to buy tickets.
