As sure as Christmas rolls around each year, so do performances of The Nutcracker, with its familiar Tchaikovsky music, its snowflakes, its wooden soldiers, its dancing mice, its Russian Spanish, Arabian and Chinese dances, and of course, its sugar plum fairy.
Now it’s time to polish the Mary Janes, brush off the velvet party dress and get your little girl a velvet mask (maybe with some pink sequins) to match. (Nutcracker audiences always feature a parade of splendidly attired little girls.)
First out of the gate is Ballet Theatre of Ohio, led by former Ohio Ballet dancer Christine Meneer. After training under the legendary Heinz Poll, she started her own ballet school in 1984; the company followed in 1993. She has choreographed six full-length ballets, including version of the Nutcracker, which has been staged at the Akron Civic Theatre for three decades.
The work returns to the Akron Civic this week, for two weekends and six performances. Go here for tickets.
Coming up: Nutcrackers from the Cleveland Ballet and the Beck Center.
