Maelstrom Collaborative Arts Presentation Imagines Four Different Futures

Thu 10/28-Sun 11/7

Over the years, Maelstrom Collaborative Arts has evolved from being a regular theater presenting scripted plays onstage into a multi-disciplinary group that surprises us anew with each new project. They came up with several creative ways to keep presenting work during the pandemic, including art and performances in the windows of their Gordon Square headquarters. And now they’ve done it again.

Their new project, Four Futures, based on a book of the same name by Peter Frase, envisions different versions of a post-capitalist world in which climate change and automation have impacted every aspect of life. Some of the projections are dystopian, some are positive.

Thirty artists divided into four teams, including visual artists and performers of various types, have been working since May to create narratives that blend live performance, visuals, video, comic books, interactive fiction and more. The show will include an in-person art gallery and an online virtual experience component.

“This is not simply an anti-capitalist fantasy,” says show devisor and MCA Executive Artistic Director Jeremy Paul. “It’s a provocative thought experiment based on the idea that capitalism will fundamentally change in the future. Some of the futures are hopeful, others decidedly less so. The purpose of Four Futures is to imagine those possibilities and to reaffirm that the decisions and policies people make today will bring about the realization of tomorrow.”

Ticket buyers will be able to visit the online portal and the art gallery, which will be open Thursdays-Saturdays through Sunday November 7. Those visiting the gallery are required to wear mass and provide proof of vaccination. Go here for tickets.
