Writers Respond to Photos at Mac’s Backs Ekphrastic Poetry Reading

Fri 7/30 @ 7PM

The Cleveland Photo Fest closed its second edition in late June but its influence goes on in the Ekphrastic Poetry Reading at Mac’s Backs inspired by the Cleveland Photo Fest exhibit that’s still on view at the store.

The photographers featured include Medina-based Adam Bernard, a newspaper photographer whose show features images of high school dances; Aireonna McCall, a commercial photographer exhibiting a set of portraits; mixed-media artist/writer Jamey Richey whose work mixed photos and text; and freelance artist/educator/ curator Michele Waalkes whose show deals with her father’s Alzheimer’s.

The five poets are performance poet/Cleveland State senior Raja Belle Freeman; James Quarles, who combines his open mic poetry with visual art and music; Benjamin Anthony  Rhodes, whose queer trans identity infuses his work; queer community organizer Elaine Schlieffer; and poet/community organizer Cindy Washabaugh.

Each poet will read poems responding to the work as well as other poems they’ve written. The reading is free and open to all.
