Duran Duran’s second album Rio hit at the perfect moment to propel them into the pop music stratosphere. Its first self-titled album in 1981 did OK (they played Pabody’s DownUnder on that tour). But it was 1982’s Rio that caused them to explode to superstar status in large part due to the heavy rotation of their track “Hungry Like a Wolf” on MTV, the channel, which debuted in August 1981. With their teen idol looks, debonair fashion sense and attraction to beautiful models, they were custom-made for MTV. With their sound, a mash-up of techno dance beats, funk and rock with a glam look, they were custom-made for the ’80s and Rio launched them.
Local writer Annie Zaleski has added a book about the Rio album and its circuitous path to hit status to the 33 1/3 series of more than 150 small books each devoted to telling the full story behind a single album. She’s filled out the story with new interviews with band members and others who were involved in making Rio a hit.
She’ll be doing a book signing at Visible Voice Books in Tremont, on their back patio or, in case of rain, inside the store. Drop by and say hello, and buy her book. Of course, they have it in stock!
