The 1943 film Best Foot Forward has one of those classic plots that’s played out in fantasies and in real life: the kid who invites a celebrity to their prom and to their amazement, the celebrity shows up.
In this film Lucille Ball plays herself — back when she was a beautiful young actress, had only recently married Desi Arnaz and was years away from creating her zany housewife personality on I Love Lucy — as a movie star who accepts a prom invitation from a young military academy cadet as part of a stunt cooked up by her press agent. Now the young man has to find a way to keep his girlfriend/date from being mad. It’s all in good fun and the Harry James Orchestra provides the lush big-band music.
Best Foot Forward is the topic of the next edition of The Musical Theater Project’s Movies at Home series. Watch TMTP artist Director Bill Rudman’s intro here, then screen the film at Amazon Prime or YouTube. Finally, join Bill on Zoom on Thursday April 15 for a post-film discussion and Q&A and maybe even a sing-along to the film’s rousing fight song “Buckle Down, Winsocki.” Go here to join the fun.
