The vision thing. It’s something that Clevelanders may not be real good at. As our steel mills and auto plants are shutting down for good, we need to radically rethink our future. The CC Future of Cleveland event drew some good ideas; read and post your thoughts on the blog, or check the new ClevelandIdeas site below to engage. Each week, we have no trouble filling Cool Cleveland with cool things going on, and cool people who do have vision. Like our feature on Cleveland Orchestra asst. conductor Jayce Ogren, or the new CD by Rob Duskey & The Rounders. We interview with Mifune vocalist Chris Fader, featured at the Sat 6/20 Big Cool Cats Music Fest, and we’re offering a “BOGO” discount with the code “BCC50” for a limited time. Oh, and that vision thing? Maybe some of us really do have it. –Thomas Mulready

Mifune kicks out a high-energy blend of R&B, Funk, Jazz, Classical, and World grooves that don’t stop until everyone’s on the dance floor. They are featured at the all-day Big Cool Cats Music Festival on Sat 6/20 at Cain Park. Read below to see how you can get two-for-one tix courtesy of Cool Cleveland.

Chris Fader sings lead and plays keys, percussion and flute, and calls herself a “little pop princess” and a “soul junkie” that loved Michael Jackson and soul music growing up, but Mifune has won awards as the best Ethnic/World Music band in the region, with an Afro-Pop sound that starts in Africa, with a stop in Jamaica, a detour through New Orleans, and up the Mississippi to hi-energy electric Chicago Blues. Watch the video interview with Big Cool Cats Music Festival co-creator Thomas Mulready, recorded at a Mifune gig recently at the Barking Spider Tavern.

After a few years of heating up the festival circuit in Michigan & Ohio, Mifune recently released their 2nd album, Time Is Watching Us, a triumph of their new groove featuring horns (trombone & sax), plus flute, keys, synth and lots of polyrhythmic percussion.

Catch Mifune at the Big Cool Cats Music Festival on Sat 6/20 at Cain Park from noon to 11PM, and snag some 2-4-1 tickets with the discount code BCC50 at http://www.BigCoolCats.com.

A Vision for Cleveland in 2020
Our Cleveland Constitution

I Hate Vision Statements! There, I said it. In fact, I hate the very notion that someone — anyone — would have the audacity to conclude that they alone hold the answer, that to them exclusively this mystery has been revealed, that a single individual has been uniquely inspired and therefore ordained as the messenger to proclaim this great truth.

I would nevertheless like to propose a living, breathing, strategic, regional roadmap — A Cleveland Constitution, if you will — A Vision of Cleveland in 2020…

Losing and Winning

As I approached the steps of Cleveland City Hall on May 7 for the noon celebration regarding the first official day the Domestic Partnership Registry enacted by City Council was in effect, I passed a friend who laughingly said, “I know you’re not attending that!”

My response was, “In fact, I am, and I also scheduled to give a short speech.” The shock on my friend’s face — actually by then he was a former friend, since our relationship changed immediately — was palpable…

Rob Duskey & the Rounders
Slanted House

Somewhere out there, someone is breaking someone else’s heart. And that is something that we should all secretly be a bit grateful for. Cautiously Optimistic, the new album from Rob Duskey and The Rounders is a shimmering example at least one positive side effect of the emotional wrecking ball.

Duskey certainly has come a long way since I first saw him perform at The Winchester’s weekly open mic last year… Read more from Matt Wardlaw here

Cleveland Got the Short End of the Med Mart Deal
Plus: Plain Dealer To Cut Again, Wants $5 Million in Savings and much more

Who got screwed on the Med Mart deal? Well, you did as taxpayer, definitely. However, so did the city despite the $20 million deal for its properties — 18.5 acres of prime downtown land.

The $20-million was hailed as a victory for Mayor Frank Jackson. I’ll bet this $20-million shot in the city’s fiscal arm will be used up in a year or two by the Jackson administration….
