Local Musician Doug McKean Releases a New Album Self-Recorded in His Basement

Fri 10/2

Northeast Ohio musician Doug McKean is well known from a series of bands and projects he’s been part of, from GC5 and Magpies to holiday band The Ohio City Singers to Pogues tribute The Boys from the County Hell. He’s also put out a series of his own solo releases, with a fifth full-length album out digitally Friday October 2, titled The Second Golden Age of Piracy.

McKean was putting together a new band and preparing a recording project when the pandemic shut things down in March. So he wrote some new songs, took some old songs he hadn’t done anything with yet, and starting recording on his own, playing all the instruments in his basement.  He sent the finished tapes to producer Don Dixon for mixing.

He describes the new material as still leaning toward his usual territory of rock and power pop but replacing some of the folk influences with more pop and funk. He’s planning to showcase the music live with his band-in-progress as soon as the pandemic eases up.

It’s been a while since he released a full-length album; his Esperanto Sessions came out in 2012. But he’s been posting tracks from the new album, such as”Kintpuash,” “Howlin’” and “Dreams of Oblivion” all summer as teasers.
