Legendary Street Fashion Photographer Is the Subject of a Documentary

Fri 4/10-Thu 4/16

Street photographer/fashion historian Bill Cunningham was a well-known figure in New York, what you might call a “character.” In the late 40s, he dropped out of college, moved to New York City, and became involved in fashion, as a designer, writer and ultimately a photographer. He was best known for his unpremeditated candid shots of what people— both well-known and anonymous — wore on the street, at clubs, parties and festivals photos which appeared for decades in numerous publications including the New York Times. He assiduously avoided cashing in on his work, and was known for travelling around Manhattan on beat-up bicycles. He died in 2016 at the age of 87.

The 2018 film The Times of Bill Cunningham, narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker, features his photographs and a newly discovered 1994 interview with him in which he talks about his time as a milliner, his relationship with Jackie Kennedy when she was First Lady, and his egalitarian views on fashion

The film will be available for viewing through Cleveland Cinemas through Thursday April 16 for $9.99. And the distributor is giving 50% of the proceeds to the local theater you book through to help make sure they can return after quarantine. Go here to purchase your ticket.
