Soldiers & Sailors Monument Marks Memorial Day

Thu 5/30 @ noon

Until 1971, when many national holidays were moved to Mondays for three days weekends, Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 each year, a day widely celebrated since the end of the Civil War to honor the war dead.

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument on Public Square still chooses to celebrate on that original date. Starting at noon, there will be a ceremony, with retired Army veteran Ryan Walters, formerly a pilot and flight instructor during his 20 years on active duty, and now a health system specialist at the Stokes VA Center, is the keynote speaker.

It’s free and open to the public.
