“Pictures Become You,” a Video Display by Brian Bess, Opens at the Akron Art Museum

Sat 10/13

Pictures Become You, opening at the Akron Art Museum’s Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Gallery, features the quirky video art of Brian Bress.

His mini-movies feature cartoonish, puppet-like characters that morph and do strange things in slow, deliberate movements in repeating loops and don’t acknowledge or interact with viewers.

“His figures convey a sense of absurdity and self-consciousness that makes them extremely appealing and mesmerizing to watch,” says Akron Art useum chief curator Ellen Rudolph. “That inaccessibility combined with the characters’ appeal creates a tension about who they are and what they are trying to tell us.”

The exhibit features single screen videos, two diptych videos and one triptych video, along with the costume and props that Bress designed and wore in the videos.

They will be on view through April 14, 2019.
