“Artbelt” at The Gallery at Lakeland Spotlights NE Ohio and Pittsburgh Area Artists

Sun 7/22 @ 3:30-5:30PM

The Gallery at Lakeland Community College offers its contribution to the current feast of art being offered in northeast Ohio by the Front and CAN triennials: ARTBELT: New Art from the Rustbelt, curated by Pittsburgh independent curator John Morris.

Gallery director Mary Urbas says, “It has always been my mission and goal to bring compelling art to The Gallery at Lakeland. I want to share the art with the Lakeland community, as I know many of The Gallery’s guests may never venture out to a gallery or visit a museum. The focus of my late summer exhibition has always been community outreach. Historically I have invited local art associations etc, to organize an exhibition of their member’s work. This year I wanted to do something a little different.”

So Urbas reached out to Morris, who had been looking for a venue in NE Ohio to showcase Pittsburgh area artists during FRONT.

“I had been interested in establishing a collaboration with artists from Western Pennsylvania, so I seized the opportunity,” says Urbas. “John formed a group on social media which was created to explore, discuss and support independent exhibitions, public art, performances and other interventions during the Front Triennial of Contemporary Art spanning Northeast Ohio.I am excited to see the work that my guest curator has selected, and to experience the work of artists that are unknown to me.”

Some of those 29 artists will be familiar to local art lovers, including Arabella Proffer whose “Astronomer” is pictured above, assemblage artist Martha Cliffel, graphic artists/painters Laura and Gary Dumm, photographer Amber Ford, mixed media artist Jenniffer Oamitz and ceramicist Angelica Pozo. But many, including a dozen from Pittsburgh, will give visitors a chance to discover something new.

The show opens with a reception Sun 7/22 @ 5:30-8:30pm and remains on view through Sun 9/7. The gallery is open Monday through Friday @ 9am-9pm, Saturday and Sunday @ 9m-5pm. It’s free and open to the public.
