Though the Cuyahoga is still a working river, unlike the Chicago River (which they’re claiming is going to be clean enough to swim in in just a few year), its recreational use has grown explosively, especially with the establishment of the Cleveland Rowing Foundation facility on its bank in the Flats at Rivergate Park.
The Cleveland Rowing Foundation also hosts the Head of the Cuyahoga regatta in September, with high school, college and adult rowers competing each year since 1996. During that time, the river is closed to working traffic. It’s a great time to come down and check out the action.
The CRF suggested the following viewing spots:
· The Scranton Spoon pier perpendicular to the Scranton Road segment of the Ohio & Erie Canalway (Towpath Trail);
· Carter Road Lift Bridge;
· Columbus Road Bridge and Hart Crane Park;
· Cleveland Metroparks’ Merwin’s Wharf restaurant at Rivergate Park – its stone patio overlooks the final meters of the race course.
