These days you can’t assume “open mic” means someone with an acoustic guitar playing Beatles tunes or originals about their last romance gone bad. We’ve seen many comedy open mics and improv open mics, and now, one of the newer twists that’s gaining traction is storytelling open mics, such as the one Story Club Cleveland hosts at the Bottlehouse in Cleveland Heights.
Like many music and comedy open mics, there are featured performers who provide the structure for the evening. This month, they include comedian Carey Callahan, Keep Talking co-host Adam Richard and Angie Hetrick, executive director of the Coventry Village business district.
This month’s theme is “Brand New,” with performers asked to tell “true stories of hoping, trying, and starting over.” If you’d like to tell your story, be at the Bottlehouse by 7pm to sign up for one of the three available slots. If more than three people sign up, they’ll draw straws to see who gets to perform. Each participant gets eight minutes to tell their story. Afterward, the audience votes for their favorite story, which gets published in Story Club Magazine.
The event is free, although there’s a suggested donation of $10 which pays the performers. The Bottlehouse sells a wide variety of drinks as well as food, so come down and make an evening of it.
