FreshtoberFest Encourages Kids to Think About Food in a Healthier Way

FreshBattle

Fri  9/18 @ 5:30PM

The best way to make healthy eating a habit is to get to people when they are young. That’s the goal of the OSU Extension’s second annual FreshtoberFest: Youth’s Garden Battle, taking place at the Tri-C Hospitality Management Center on Public Square.

The event pairs nine local chefs with kids from nine area youth gardens in a competition that celebrates (and uses) fresh, locally grown food. You can come taste and cast your vote for free. There will also be appetizers by Chef Ky-Wai and a cash bar. And the event will also mark the release of the 2015 Freshtoberfest compilation CD, featuring hip-hop tracks about eating and living healthy, written and performed by the kids with the guidance of Dee Jay Doc.

Teams include returning champions Cumberland Gardening Team, Hope Grows Here, Project Grow at Mary Bethune, Project Grow at the Music Settlement, RapArt, the SPN Teen Garden, the Montessori High School Garden, the Magic Memorial Garden and Greencorps Learning Garden. They’re paired with chefs from Sow Food, L’Albatros, Wake Robin Fermented Foods, the Music Settlement, Red the Steakhouse, Hub 55, University Hospitals, Table 45 and Edwins.
