A lot of jazz musicians cut their teeth in northeast Ohio before pulling up stakes and moving elsewhere, often when they go away to school.
Trumpeter Josh Rzepka left town to get his masters in music at Boston University — and then he came back. He’s been constantly busy ever since, making both jazz and classical records. Last year, he put together his Trumpet Genesis project, bringing together some of the top trumpeters in town whom he admires for concerts and a CD.
He’s preparing to record a new jazz CD, and he’ll be sharing some of the music that will be part of that project when he plays at the Akron Civic Theatre as part of its intimate Jazz @ the Civic series. He and his quartet — which also includes pianist Theron Brown, assist Mike Forfia, and drummer Mike Gonder — will mix those compositions with beloved jazz standards.
Tickets are $20 or two for $30.
