In the spring of 2026, the After School Shop opened in one of the silver hangars on West 28th Street in Hingetown, joining the reactivation of those intriguing but recently underutilized spaces. The small shop features attractive and accessible displays of children’s items, with an emphasis on the new generation of picture books, with their artistic images and inclusive stories. They’re augmented by an array of well-made hands-on toys that are the opposite of the plastic disposable playthings we see too many of these days. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday; bring the kids to chat with owner Jillian or come in alone and find the kid in your adult self. And check their Instagram for special events such as chalking parties, story times and cotton candy spinning.
