Don’t expect to see a person named Father John Misty at the Rock Hall’s Summer in the City concert tonight.
There is no Father John Misty.
It’s the hide-behind name for singer-songwriter-guitarist-drummer Joshua Tillman, who released some solo albums as J. Tillman prior to doing a four-year stint as drummer in Seattle-based indie-folk band Fleet Foxes.
He continued to release albums as J. Tillman until last year’s Fear Fun on Sub Pop when his new persona/name emerged. He’s typically vague and circuitous about why he did this, which reflects some aspects of his music.
Too much religion meets too many drugs? He’s got both in his background.
Of interest to Cleveland obsessives, he performed on the track “Young Lady” on Indicud, by Cleveland-area native rapper Kid Cudi, which came out in April.
Minneapolis’ Night Moves opens the show on the Rock Hall plaza (on the lobby stage if it rains). It’s free.
