Inner-ring suburbs push to become bike-friendly

Cleveland Heights and Lakewood are serious about bicycling. Residents in both cities are organizing to make their neighborhoods friendly for cyclists. And we’re not talking about adding a few “Share the Road” signs. These citizens want to improve on infrastructure and make their ‘hoods radically easier to bike.

On the eastside, the Cleveland Heights Bicycle Coalition is working with Cleveland Hts City Council to improve bicycling infrastructure. The Coalition presented Mayor Ed Kelley with a petition signed by 500+ individuals who support the cause. The city is now testing bike sharrow (it just got its first one). Sharrows are markings on the road reminding cars to share the road. They’re used as an alternative to bike lanes, when roads are too narrow to have a dedicated bike lane installed.

Over to the westside, Lakewood’s Planning and Developmenr Dept. is hosting a Lakewood Bikeway Planning Community Workshop on Tue 10/5 from 6:30 – 8PM @ Lakewood Public Library. Residents can share their ideas and input about improving cycling in Lakewood.

In the interest of improving the cycling environment, the bicycle plan’s purpose will be to identify and then direct the implementation of a continuous network of cross-town routes and facilities. Such a network will promote safe and convenient bicycle travel throughout the community for riders of all abilities, skills and objectives.
