On A Roll

We seem to be moving in the right direction. Whether we’re moving fast enough is debatable.

One thing that’s not debatable is the awesomeness of the Tri-C JazzFest, now in its 39th year. Many of us weren’t even born when it all started back in 1980. We spoke with Dominick Farinacci of Solon who played JazzFest at age 17, caught the ear of Wynton Marsalis, and now headlines internationally. He gives us a heads up on this year’s JazzFest Thu 6/28Sat 6/30.

Dancing Wheels was unceremoniously booted out of their long-time studios at the Masonic Auditorium, and is back to share the story of how they landed on both wheels, just down the street, with a fundraiser and open house this week. Loren Naji continues his transformation into the Church of Art, premiering at Waterloo Arts Festival on Saturday, along with post rock duo MOSSOM, debuting their new single at the same event.

Rolling two fundraisers into one, the June Juke Joint supports the anti-racism group AMP NEO and NODS, or Northern Ohio Detention Support, helps immigrants in detention. CoolCleveland’s Stephan Haluska has the video preview.

Mansfield shares his thoughts on necessary incarceration and protecting witnesses, Alex Sukhoy offers 5 steps for reentering the workforce, and the CoolCleveland crew offers reviews and PHOTOSTREAMS of cool stuff you should have caught. Don’t roll too fast or you’ll miss it. –Thomas Mulready

The internationally renowned Tri-C JazzFest, now in its 39th year, is bringing both jazz legends and rising stars into town for what’s become a three-day indoors and out celebration at Playhouse Square, including an outdoor stage featuring local talent. But the festival is also about education with the Tri-C JazzFest Academy Summer Camp nurturing young players.

Trumpet player Dominick Farinacci was once one of those players. Now he’s an international star himself – and he runs the summer camp. He talks to CoolCleveland’s John Benson about how important the education component of Tri-C JazzFest is and how it helped boost his own career. Thu 6/28-Sat 6/30.

A year ago, Cleveland’s Dancing Wheels Company & School, which has become nationally noted for its mix of wheelchair and “stand-up” dancers, was hit with a major challenge, when they had to vacate their long-time home in the Masonic Auditorium Building. A year later, they’re ready to show off their new larger, more visible space just down the street with an open house and fundraiser.

Company founder/director Mary Verdi-Fletcher tells us all about the opportunities the new space offers and how the journey to relocate proved to be a positive development for the company. Sat 6/30.

SPONSORED: SMART SEATS and the “Mother” of Musicals at Beck Center Beck Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the adoption of the popular Smart Seats program introduced by Playhouse Square. The program offers Beck Center guests the chance to experience exceptional theater for just $10. Winner of multiple Tony and Awards, Gypsy is considered by many to be one of Broadway’s all-time triumphs. Gypsy runs July 6-August 12 at Beck Center. Tickets, including Smart Seats, are on sale now at BeckCenter.org.

Cleveland artist Loren Naji is always coming up with unique new projects, whether it’s living in a giant sphere made from demolition rubble or transforming an ordinary house in Collinwood into the freewheeling Satellite Installation Gallery.

Now Satellite has been undergoing a transformation into the Church of Art, debuting at the Waterloo Arts Fest. He and his team of three other artists are the steering committee for an open-ended series of projects, of which that’s just the first, based on the idea that creativity is ubiquitous and in everyone. “We worship creativity rather than a Creator,” he says. Sat 6/30.

Jamal Collins grew up in hardscrabble East Cleveland but had something better in mind than ending up in prison like many of his peers. He earned a bachelor of fine arts at the University of Akron, worked a corporate gig for a decade and then became a freelance graphic artist.

Now he’s turned to teaching graphic design and other content creation skills, and mentoring and empowering young people. “I want to give people advice that I needed,” he says. Nicole Hennessy learns his whole story and shares it with us.

SPONSORED: Lakewood Arts Festival Detroit Avenue (from Belle to Arthur) on Sat 8/4 from 10am-6pm. On one glistening summer day each year, Lakewood hosts a juried arts festival with 175 regional/national artists, drawing 14,000 collectors and festival-goers. Founded in 1978, the Festival is one of Lakewood’s favorite traditions, funding a scholarship and grants for arts education programs. To donate, click here.

Many of us are crying tears of frustration and anger as we see the needlessly cruel treatment of immigrants and refugees – children separated from parents, deportations without fair hearings, and here in NE Ohio, raids on workplaces where long-time US residents were just doing their jobs, grueling jobs not many want but which keep our economy going.

Deb Kline of Ohio Jobs With Justice talks to us about what is going on, who needs help and where you can contribute. And this Sat 6/30 @ 10am-1pm, there will be a Families Belong Together rally at Public Square, one of a network of such rallies taking place across the country.

VIDEO: ICE Detainee/Black Arts Fundraiser Event

Two local activist organizations, NODS and AMP NEO present June Juke Joint. This special night celebrates local black artists, in addition to raising support for two good causes. The anti-racism organization AMP NEO uses community collaborating efforts to change the narrative in our everyday lives. NODS or Northern Ohio Detention Support is a collaborative effort to offer community and support to immigrants in detention.

Together, they are raising money to help continue the funding of black arts and to provide safety and materials for those most affected by ICE detention centers. June Juke Joint will include performances by Maz, Fana, Tay + Dante, Adab, Shirtless, and Smoke Screen.

Job hunting after a work gap, for whatever reason, whether voluntary or not, can be daunting. But the struggle is same: How do you position yourself for a steady job when you’ve been applying your skills in a different direction?

CoolCleveland career columnist Alex Sukhoy works with clients who are reentering the workforce. In this column she gives some free advice on how to position yourself so that you appear well-informed on the latest in your field, with up-to-date skills that suggest your mind didn’t take a break. “Being prepared and proactive, and thinking long-term, will only help you succeed,” she says.
