Moment of Truth

08.02-08.09.23

We can’t put it off any longer
Finally, one of the most arts-oriented arts festivals in our festival-rich region is taking place this Saturday: the Lakewood Arts Festival, featuring almost 200 artists, including the best of our regional artists, plus live local music on four stages, demonstrations, food trucks, summertime treats, and stuff for the whole family. We’ll see you on the street. At long last, cultural festivals are all around town: catch a Ukrainian Fest, a Polish Festival, a Puerto Rican festival, a Slovak party, a discussion of art & real estate in Hough, and a couple of fleas. The BorderLight Theatre Festival is back with an all-fringe lineup. The Rock Hall is collaborating with Akron-based EarthQuaker Devices on a limited-edition guitar pedal designed by local legend, artist Derek Hess. CMA’s MIX party celebrates the music & culture of New Orleans. Akron Soul Train brings some thought-provoking new shows. CoolCleveland commentator C. Ellen Connally, herself a former judge, feels the judgment against Judge Pinky Carr is a bit judgmental.

At CoolCleveland, we’ve taken extraordinary measures to ensure that all our readers are aware of how important it is to VOTE NO on Issue 1 this coming Tuesday, August 8. We’ve knocked doors, written postcards, dropped lit, installed yard signs, crafted editorials, sent mailings, and answered everyone’s questions as best we could. Now it’s your turn, and now is the time. If you haven’t already voted by mail, be sure to visit your local polling location or the Board of Elections to cast your NO vote on Issue 1. It’s now or never.

 ARTS

The Lakewood Arts Festival is only a single day but it’s one of the most art- and activity-packed arts festivals in the area. The popular, well-attended event is now in its 46th year.

Enjoy nearly 200 artists, live local music on four stages, spoken word performances, and artist demonstrations of pottery, chalk, painting and drawing, plus plenty of food trucks, drinks, snacks and summertime treats for the whole family this Sat 8/5 from 10AM-6PM. When they say “something for everyone,” this is what they mean. Read more.

 DEMOCRACY

Should an Illinois billionaire get to tell Ohio women what they can do with their bodies?  Or whether Ohio voters can amend their state constitution to hold corrupt legislators, bulldozing unpopular policies into law, accountable?

That’s what’s at stake on August 8, when voters will decide whether Issue 1 will pass, which would silence the voice of Ohio voters and give unchecked power to that corrupt, illegally gerrymandered legislature that doesn’t want to share. The hypocrisy alone should make every person of every political stripe want to vote NO, with that Illinois billionaire dumping another $4 million into the “Yes” campaign which laughably claims to be protecting the Ohio constitution from — out-of-state billionaires!

 DAY TRIP

One of northeast Ohio’s greatest treasures is its lake, both an economic and recreational asset. And it’s one we too often take for granted. So during our way-too-short summer it’s great to find new places to enjoy the water, sand and fresh air. One that’s close by is the little town of Vermilion, which stakes its identity on its proximity to the lake.

That includes hosting numerous festivals, such as its big Festival of the Fish in June and the Chalk It Up! chalk fest in Victory Park this Sat 8/5 from 10AM-2PM. It means restaurants with lovely lake views and menus heavy on Lake Erie fish, cute shops filled with shore-themed items, and vineyards that take advantage of an ideal climate for grape growing. Columnist Claudia Taller, who lived in Vermilion as a teenager, shares more. Read more.

 NEWS

A Rockin’ Collaboration

POINT OF ORDER

 C. ELLEN CONNALLY

Prosecution of Former Judge Is Overkill

During her service as a judge of the Cleveland Municipal Court, Pinky Carr exercised poor judgment and made decisions detrimental to our entire system of justice and all members of the judiciary. She mistreated defendants and lawyer; used her courtroom to sentence people who were unable to pay fines to debtors’ prison; and issued arrest warrants for people who failed to appear in court, even though the court was officially closed due to the pandemic.

The bottom line is that Carr was stripped of her judgeship, her license to practice law and the ability to make a living in a profession in which she had been engaged most of her adult life. How many more pounds of flesh must she pay? Read more.
